NANCY MILLER MELTON
Nancy Miller Melton, age 79, of Evergreen, Alabama died on August 7, 2024. She was born May 17, 1945 in Ouachita Parish, City of Monroe, Louisiana. She was predeceased in death by her husband of 56 years, William Dudley Melton, her parents, Virginia Kersh Miller and John Richard Miller, Jr., and her brother, David Earl Miller. Her maternal grandparents were Mary Virginia Kersh and John Earl Kersh of Monroe, Louisiana. Her paternal grandparents were Lucille McGowin Miller and John Richard Miller, Sr. of Brewton, Alabama.
Her father was on active duty in Europe with the United States Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force, when she was born. Upon his discharge, he was reunited with his wife and saw his three month old daughter, Nancy, for the first time. They moved to Brewton, Alabama.
Nancy attended the public schools in Brewton and graduated from T. R. Miller High School. She attended Converse College for two years and transferred to the University of Alabama where she graduated with a B.A. Degree and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
In March of 1967, she married William Dudley Melton.
In Evergreen, she was a member of the Evergreen Study Club for 50 years, a member of the Evergreen-Conecuh County Public Library Board and Chairman of the Library Board during the construction of the new Library in 1979.
She served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Mobile for 15 years from 1987 to 2002.
She was a longtime member of The Evergreen Baptist Church and served for many years on the Building and Grounds Committee of which she was a sustaining member. When the Evergreen Baptist Church Sanctuary was remodeled in 2001, she served on the Interim Design Committee.
She is survived by her beloved children: Nancy Dudley Melton (Tyler) Berry of Franklin, Tennessee, and Richard Plowden (Jennifer) Melton of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; five grandchildren: Lathram Olivia Berry, Tyler Rieves (Tori) Berry, V, Mary Dudley Berry, Lee Miller Melton and Virginia Catherine Melton; and brother John Richard (Carol) Miller, III of Loxley, Alabama, and sister, Jean Miller (Sandy) Stimpson of Mobile, Alabama.
A memorial service will be held at Evergreen Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, 2024, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
