Milton C. Moorer Obituary

Milton C. Moorer , Jr. passed away on October 2,2025 in Huntsville, Alabama, Milton.

The son of Milton C. Moorer, ,Sr. and Euna Mae Burgess Moorer, was born on his father’s farm near Evergreen, Alabama, on  May 25, 1938. He attended Evergreen High School where he was a member of the Evergreen Aggies  football team. Following high school he graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in electrical engineering  and a concentration in electronics.

After college, Milton moved to Virginia where he worked for several years with a team building and programming computers to stabilize the decks of aircraft carriers in rough seas. In the sixties he returned to Alabama  to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, and became one of the engineers working in the space program headed by Dr. Wernher von Braun. His team wrote  and ran programs that tested rocket engines.

One of the stories he liked to tell was of a test of some space equipment off shore at Los Angeles which involved dropping the equipment from varying heights into the sea. Stress measurements were taken and the results broadcast to a distant receiver where they were recorded on tape. After the first drop the results tape contained not numerical results but rock and roll music from a nearby radio station. The admiral in charge of the port called in all the floating cranes (mechanical) and formed a wall between the test area and the radio station.

Huntsville was his home for the rest of Milton’s life.  There he met and married Mary McNeely  and they had three children: Milton III, Monica, and Michael. They formed a loving  family which came together and cared for him tenderly during his last months.

Although Milton enjoyed the sea in Virginia and the mountains in Huntsville and although he travelled nationally and internationally, his heart remained in the fields and hills of south Alabama. There he grew up among young cousins and friends --hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing and generally exploring the world.  In later years he frequently returned to the farm, or to high school class reunions to relive old experiences and to renew long and valued friendships.

Graveside services were held 2:00 pm., Thursday, October 9, 2025 at Magnolia Cemetery. Cope Keahey Funeral Home directed.

He is survived by sons Milton III and Michael of Huntsville, daughter Monica Maness (Mrs. David) of Panama City Beach, sister Beth Halsey (Mrs. James) of Birmingham, nephew Mark Congleton of Birmingham, nephew Bruce Congleton of Fairbanks, Alaska cousin Robert Moorer of Evergreen, Cindy Bond of Huntsville,  wife Wenona Moorer of Owens Crossroads, and many valued friends.
