Ms. Laura Jeanette Hartley Weaver passed away Sunday, June 18, 2023. She was 84. A private family viewing will be held from 10:30 to 10:50 am, with funeral services following at 11:00, Friday, June 23, 2023, at New Home Baptist Church, McKenzie, AL. Reverend Gary Miller and Brother Jamey Wismer will officiate. Interment will follow in the New Home Church Cemetery. Cope-Keahey is entrusted with these arrangements.
Ms. Weaver was the fifth of eleven children born to Houston and Myrtle Hartley. She grew up in McKenzie, AL where she dreamed of becoming a schoolteacher while working in the fields. After she married in 1957, she eventually settled in Evergreen, AL where she raised three children: Tracy, Gary, and Leigh. She was a member of Bower Baptist Church, where she assisted with the Home Bound Ministry for a period of time while physically able, and the Evergreen High School Quarterback Club for many years. A humble and quiet spoken lady, Ms. Weaver was a surrogate mother to many. She was a fantastic cook, who was known for her cat-head biscuits, tomato gravy, turnips, peas, Ice Box fruitcakes, German Chocolate, Red Velvet, and Carrot cakes, among other things. Along with several good cups of coffee and conversation, Ms. Weaver dearly loved her children, daughters-in-law, son-in-law, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, extended family, and friends.
Survivors include sons Tracy (Laura) Weaver of Opp and Gary (Sharon) Weaver of Pike Road; daughter Leigh (Ray) Yokel of Helena; brother Leon (Cheryl) Hartley of Brewton; sisters Mae Padgett of Evergreen, Betty Riley of Eclectic, and Dot Hartley of Fort White, FL; grandchildren Andrew (Hope) Weaver, Katie (Andrew) Schmitt, Cammie (Jacob) Turner, Anna Payton Weaver, Chandler Weaver, Reagan Yokel and Carson Yokel; great-grandchildren Haddon Schmitt, John Woodrow Weaver, Piper Kate Schmitt and Knox Schmitt; and, a number of nieces and nephews.
