Katherine Nix Obituary

August 22, 1952 – July 23, 2026

Katharine "Kitty" Clyde Nix passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at the age of 73.

To those who loved her, she was simply Kitty—funny, sassy, determined, tenderhearted, and always a person to be reckoned with. She delighted in music from the 1960s, especially Herman's Hermits, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Petula Clark, and the Beach Boys. She loved coffee prepared just right, Diet Coke, sweets, costume jewelry, shopping, mystery television shows, and sharing stories about everything from her latest meal to her next birthday wish list.

Her signature "Kitty Pose"—one hand gently resting behind her ear and a warm smile across her face—became one of the many images her family will forever treasure.

Among the many traditions that surrounded Kitty, none was more important than celebrating her birthday. To Kitty, birthdays were never just another day on the calendar—they were the celebration of her life. Her brothers and sisters made certain that every birthday was filled with gifts, laughter, family, and joy.

Over the years those celebrations became affectionately known as a Kittypalooza—a tradition of gatherings, thoughtful presents, recorded greetings, and whatever it took to make sure Kitty knew she was deeply loved. Whether the family traveled to her or brought her home, the message was always the same:  You are loved.  You are celebrated.  You are ours.

Kitty spent her childhood in Evergreen, Alabama, before moving to Louisville, Kentucky, where she lived with her birth mother, Ann Heil Nix. After her mother's passing, Kitty was fortunate to live in caring homes where devoted caregivers became like extended family. Harbor House held a special place in her heart, especially the friendship and kindness of caregiver Brittany Knoth. In her final years, Kitty continued to be surrounded by compassionate caregivers whose kindness, dignity, and devoted care brought great comfort to both Kitty and her family.

Kitty was preceded in death by her parents, Ann Heil Nix and Joseph B. Nix Jr.; her stepbrother, Darwin Gray Nix; and her niece, Sandra Elizabeth Jackson.

She is survived by Sandra Trainham Nix, who was known to Kitty as Mother; her sisters, Nancy Nix O'Farrell (Michael), Ellen Nix Garner (John), and Kelsey B. Nix (Roy Ovesen); her brothers, Joseph B. Nix III (Linda) and Richard D. C. Nix Sr. (Zebbie); along with many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family members, cherished caregivers, and dear friends.

Perhaps Kitty's greatest gift was one she never realized she was giving. Through the privilege of loving her, her family learned patience, perseverance, compassion, and the immeasurable value of celebrating every life. For seventy-three years, Kitty quietly kept her family connected. And through every Kittypalooza, every weekly phone call, every smile, every laugh, and every unforgettable Kitty Pose, they gave that love right back.

Those who wish to join the family in celebrating Kitty's life are warmly invited to attend a brief graveside service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Nix family plot in Magnolia Cemetery. Cope-Keahey directing.
