Mr. James Leon Windham, age 75 of Evergreen passed away Saturday, August 20, 2022, in a Pensacola hospital.
Leon was born October 20, 1946, to James Franklin Windham and Mildred Lela King Windham; he was a 1965 graduate of Evergreen High School. Leon served 271/2 years in the U.S. Navy, at retirement he was a Master Chief; very active in his community and with civic affairs; he was a Master Mason, Shriner, Knight Templar and the Scottish Rites. Leon and Tess were members of the Sepulga Baptist Church; he enjoyed hunting and fishing and gardening, he had lots of vegetables to give to family and friends. Anyone that had met him knew "he never met a stranger". He earned the title, "Conecuh County's Watch Dog!" and had been the community's Santa Claus for the past 15 years. Everyone loved him, he will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, September 3, 2022, at the Veterans Memorial in Evergreen. Rev. Wayne McMillan and Rev. Michael Jackson will officiate. Full military honors will be given by the U.S. Navy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital. Cope-Keahey Funeral Home is entrusted with the services.
Left to cherish his memory, loving wife, Tess Windham; son, Jimmie Windham (Maria) of Greenville, AL; daughter, Jamie Bass (Joe) of St. Petersburg, FL; grandchildren, Jayde Windham and Jewel Windham.
