James Cary Travis Obituary

 

Mr. James Cary Travis, 93, a resident of Conecuh County, AL died on Saturday, December 13, 2025.  Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at Welcome Church Cemetery on Highway 31, north of Travis Bridge.  Rev. Clifford Morris will be officiating with Cope-Keahey Funeral Home directing.

 

Mr. Cary was born on January 6, 1932 in Conecuh County, AL.  He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-six years, Alice Marian Holleman Travis; his parents, James Calloway Travis and Mary Francis Cary Travis;brothers, Emmett (Faye) Travis and Charles Travis; and one sister, Bessie Marie Travis.  He is survived by his son, Wayne Holleman Travis; nephew Lee (Cindy) Travis and niece, Anna Maria Parker. 

 

Mr. Cary spent a lot of his early childhood in Brooklyn, AL with his    


Grandma and Grandpa Cary.  He attended Welcome School, Flat Rock School, and graduated from Evergreen High School in 1950.

 

After graduating high school, Mr. Cary gained employment with First National Bank in Montgomery, as a runner.  In 1952, he was drafted into the U.S. Army Infantry and fought in The Korean War.  After the Korean Armistice Agreement, Mr. Cary returned to Alabama and continued working at First National Bank rising to the position of vice president of the Commercial Loan Department. He continued his education by attending Alabama Christian University and the Virginia School of Banking.  

 

Mr. Cary married Alice Marian Holleman, of Macon, GA in 1955.  In 1970, he and his wife moved back to the Welcome Community in Conecuh County and purchased the Hill Presley home and farm.

 

There he joined his brother, Emmett, to form Travis Brothers Quality Pork Producers and also served as book keeper for their sawmill business.  In 1978, Mr. Cary gained employment with the U.S. Postal Service in Evergreen, AL where he continued working until he retired in 1996.  Having spent the majority of his life in Conecuh County, Mr. Cary was proud of his heritage.  He enjoyed telling stories about his ancestors including his triple great uncle, William Barrett Travis, commander of the Alamo.

 

Mr. Cary loved all animals but especially his ‘beloved’ roosters, his cats, his dogs, and his McCurdy horses. Mr. Cary was a one of a kind individual. His kindness and smile will be missed by all.
