Mr. James “Poppa” Powell of Evergreen passed away unexpectedly Friday, November 19, 2020. He was 80 years old.
Mr. Powell had a dedicated career of 50 plus years working in law enforcement. He worked for multiple agencies but most notably for Evergreen Police Department, Conecuh and Monroe County Sherriff Departments. He held ranks such as Chief, Assistant Chief, Sargent, Lieutenant, and Investigator. He loved fishing and spending time with his family.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm., Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at Cope-Keahey Chapel. Rev. Neil Butler will officiate. Interment will follow in the Witherington Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Cope-Keahey Funeral Home is entrusted with these arrangements.
Left to cherish his memory, sons, John (Nicole) Powell of Evergreen, Chad Powell and fiancee’ (Laura) of Evergreen, Brothers, Elmer Powell of Pensacola, and JV (Alice) Powell of Pace, grandchildren, Jamee Powell, Kylar Powell, Kamren Powell, Brianna Powell, Alexandria Powell, Brian Powell, Wyatt Bailey; great-grandchild, Dakota Perdue.
Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his wife, Marqueeta Carrier Powell, his parents Lucian Powell and Bethelle Johnson Powell, brothers, Joe Powell and Billy Powell, sister Frances Powell Dark.
Serving as active pallbearers, Michael Lambert, Tyrone Boykin, Robbie Moorer, Sheriff Tom Boatwright, Judge Steve Flemming, and Sean Klaetsch.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Evergreen Police department and the Conecuh County Sherriff department.
