Elizabeth Griggers Obituary

Elizabeth June Griggers, age 84, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2021.

Elizabeth was born to Minnie Lou Salter and Norval David Salter on March 30, 1937 in Evergreen, Alabama. On November 19, 1954 Elizabeth and James Griggers were married in Evergreen, Alabama. Their union lasted for 62 years until his passing on May 6, 2017.

Elizabeth and her siblings, brother David and sister Maxine were raised by their mother in Evergreen, Alabama in impoverished conditions.  As a child of 8 years Elizabeth boarded a bus, alone, and rode to Montgomery where it was arranged for her to be met by an uncle, that owned a butcher shop, to pick up food for her family.  When Elizabeth arrived in Montgomery there was no one there to greet her. A lady at the bus station, unsuccessfully, attempted to help Elizabeth locate her uncle but because the only information Elizabeth could remember was her own address in Evergreen she was placed back on the bus and returned home with nothing.

From early on in life Elizabeth was an extraordinarily resilient and strong-willed individual who never complained, or showed weakness.  Growing up Elizabeth picked cotton and tobacco as well as cooking and cleaning to help her working mom. All her life Elizabeth, in her own unique way, tried to help her family and others in every way she could up to the very end of her life.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughter Donna Tugwell, (John), Grandchildren: Tiffany Gregory, (Randy), Cameron Griggers, Andrea Griggers, John “Spike” Tugwell, (Anna), Brandon Tugwell, Taylor Cota, (Kris), Corey Griggers, and Toni Griggers, and 14 Great Grandchildren. All of whom she loved and cherished.

Elizabeth was Predeceased by her spouse James on May 6, 2017 and son Scott Griggers on April 25, 2019.
