Betty Jean (Nowell) McKenzie Obituary

Betty Jean Mckenzie, age 91, of Evergreen, went home to be with her lord and savior on August 29,2025, at her residence.

Betty was born on August 16, 1934, in Ashford, Alabama toBertie Viola Deese and Barney William Nowell. She graduated from Ashford High School and went on to dedicate 26 years of service as a member of the management team at Knud Nielsen. She was a faithful member of Bower Memorial Baptist Church.

On December 29, 1952, Betty married the love of her life, Emmett McKenzie, in Georgia. Together they built a home filled with love, faith, and family, and shared many wonderful years before his passing.

Known lovingly as Maw-Maw, Betty found joy in cooking, tending to her plants, antique picking, reading recipes, and—most of all—spending time with her family. She had a gift for making even ordinary days special and never let anyone leave her home hungry. Her grandchildren will forever remember her hugs, her stories, and her quiet but steady encouragement.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Barney and Bertie Nowell; her siblings, Barney Nowell, Jr., Frances Guy, Hoover (Corky) Nowell, James Audrey (Punk) Nowell, Mitchell Buie, and Shellie (Skeet) Nowell; her husband, Emmett McKenzie; and her grandson, Allen O’Neal McKenzie.

Those left to cherish Maw-Maw’s memory include her children,Gregory McKenzie of Jay, Florida; George Allen McKenzie of Evergreen, Alabama; Ronny Lynn McKenzie (Kat) of Hayneville, Alabama and Angela Dawn Mandrelle (Joe) of Pace, Florida. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Doug McKenzie, Haley Aitken-Fender (Joshua), Hannah O’Daniel (Brosnan), Heather Mullins (David), Katherine Johnson (Will), Kim Carson, Morgan Rector (Micah), Sommer Morris (Burt), and Will McKenzie (Lexi). Her great-grandchildren include Arden Johnson, Carlee Mullins, Cayden Mullins, Colton Mullins, Connor Carson, Elijah Rector, Ezra Johnson, Ford Morris, Kayla Kelly, Kinley Jean O’Daniel, Kyleigh McKenzie, and Natalie McKenzie. She was further blessed with great-great-grandchildren, Bryar Stewart and Sawyer Sims.
