Betty was born May 4, 1928, to the late Roy and Nonie Ward of Dozier, AL. Survivors include: daugh-
ters, Susan Brooks Bryant (Bruce) of Clinton, MS, Nancy Brooks Pevey of Jacksonville, AL, daughter-
in-law Donna Fuller Brooks Hulsey of Cleveland, TN, sister-in-law Doris Ward of Birmingham, AL,
step-son Alan Couch (Sharon) of Brewton, AL and step-daughter Ann Couch Crosby (Larry) of Brew-
ton, AL, 10 grandchildren, numerous great-grand children, a great-great grandchild, and a number of
nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceeded in death by her first husband of 53 years, R. Lynn Brooks of Evergreen, AL, son
Greg Brooks of Cleveland, TN, second husband of 23 years, Dr. Roy Couch, of Brewton, AL, brother
Roy Ward, sisters Navada Ward and Francis Christy, all of Birmingham, AL.
Betty attended Dozier High School in Dozier, AL and met her husband Lynn while he was serving in
the Navy at Pensacola, FL. After his discharge, they were married and spent most of the next 53 year in
Evergreen, AL, where he was an insurance representative for Liberty National Life Insurance. They
were faithful members of Evergreen Baptist Church where she served as church secretary a number of
years. They operated a ceramics shop out of their home where Betty taught classes during the '70s and
early '80s. Her first love, after her Lord and Savior, was her family. She especially enjoyed her grand-
children and loved to see their excited faces when they excitedly completed a piece of ceramic art.
Through the years the Brooks' home was a gathering place for family and friends and friends of the
kids. It was also a light house for many passers-by needing a helping hand. Betty never turned away a
person in need and was often seen feeding lunch on her patio to hungry strangers. She believed Jesus'
words, "If you have done it unto one of the least of these, you have done it unto me." Her kitchen was
the focal point for many memories of friends' visits, family dinners, holiday celebrations, laughter, love
and wonderful food.
After the death of Lynn, Betty married Dr. Roy Couch, whom she had known most of her life, and
moved to Brewton, AL, where he retired from his chiropractic practice, at the age of 90. Betty gained a
whole new family and set of friends through her marriage to Roy. Betty and Roy enjoyed traveling to-
gether, shopping, and spending time with family. They were active members of E. Brewton Baptist
Church, where they enjoyed participating in the senior adult activites and gathering with friends. She
lost her precious partner, Roy, after 23 years of marriage, during the Covid epidemic. She moved to
Clinton, MS in 2020 to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She kept her beautiful Christian spirit
and love for her Lord til the end. She will be greatly missed but lived a full life of 96 years!
Memorials may be given to Brilla Soccer Ministried (a ministry to reach begun by her grandson, Rusty
Bryant,) to purchase Bibles for inner city youth.
