Terry Wayne Hammonds

Terry “Wayne” Hammonds, Sr., age 66, passed away Friday (December 2, 2016) at his home in Evergreen, AL.

 

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 Sunday (December 4, 2016) at Sparta Academy’s Richard Brown Gymnasium. Reverends Mike Bledsoe and Edward Robinson will officiate.

Visitation will be held Saturday (December 3, 2016) from 5:00-8:00, at Evergreen’s Cope-Keahey Funeral Home.

 

Mr. Hammonds was born October 14, 1950 to Jesse (“Jack”) and Edna (m. Dyess) Hammonds (both deceased). He was a lifelong resident of Evergreen.

 

Mr. Hammonds is survived by his wife Michelle Lister Hammonds of Evergreen, AL; son Chad (Amy) Hammonds of Fairhope, AL; son Terry Wayne Hammonds Jr. of Atlanta, GA; his daughter Ashley (Cameron) Hammonds Askew, of Helena, AL; and his stepson Taylor Harrelson, of Evergreen, AL. He is also survived by his three sisters, Ruth (Ray) Lynch of Mobile, AL; Laura Wilson (Walter Wayne) of Jefferson, AL; and Sherry (Wayne) Sims of Andalusia, AL. Mr. Hammonds was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church, in Lyeffion.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers Billy (June) Hammonds, Bobby Hammonds, and Benny (Linda) Hammonds; and his sister Earlene (Fred) Stucky.

 

Mr. Hammonds was a beloved teacher and administrator. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Troy State University in 1973. He went on to earn a Master of Science Degree in Administration and Supervision from Livingston University in 1977. Mr. Hammonds began his career in education in 1972 and served in various teaching and administration roles in the Conecuh County public school system, until his retirement in 2001. Since, he has happily held the position of Headmaster at Sparta Academy. His love for education, his staff, and his students came second only behind his love for his family.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Hammonds memory, to a student sponsorship fund for Sparta Academy. Donations may be sent to the Bank of Evergreen or Sparta Academy (300 Pierce Street, Evergreen, AL 36401). Donations may also be made in his memory to the Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge (1104 Ireland Way, Birmingham, AL 35205).
